Board Meeting Minutes

June 10, 2006, Eiseley Branch Library, Lincoln

Peggy Adair, AFCON legislative liaison

Dwayne Ball, representing the NE ACLU and Nebraska Assn. of Scholars.

Tom Black, representing the Nebraska State Education Association..

Joanne Chapuran, representing the Nebraska High School Press Association.

Mel Krutz, representing Nebraska Center for the Book

Cathi McMurtry, AFCON Treasurer.

Opening: Past President Moshman brought the meeting to order at 10:13 a.m.

Minutes: Minutes of the May 13, 2006 board meeting taken by Karen Buckley were distributed. Motion to approve: Adair. Second: Chapuran. Approved unanimously. Ball volunteered as acting secretary for this meeting.

Treasurer: (Cathi McMurtry) $1673 in account. As of today, there are 36 individuals out of 47, and 13 member organizations out of 19 with paid dues (or excused dues) for 2006. Motion to approve: Black. Second: Krutz. Approved unanimously.

Policy Coordinator (Moshman): Moshman discussed the Ward Churchill case at the University of Colorado, recent developments in the application of the Hazelwood case in universities (Garcetti v. Ceballos), and the larger perspective of current attacks on leftist faculty in higher education. Discussion followed.

Newsletter (Tom Black): Spring newsletter has gone out in the mail.

Legislative Liason (Adair): Legislature out of session.

Student Free Expression efforts: Adair, on behalf of a citizen's group working on a student free expression bill, read the latest version of the bill.

Member Reports: Krutz mentioned that the Nebraska summer writer's conference sponsored by the Nebraska Center for the Book would be at UNL in Andrews Hall June 19-22 and asked for AFCON materials.

Old business: A proposed amendment to the AFCON Constitution or a policy change to allow student organizations to pay lower dues was discussed. Tabled until the next meeting.

Adjournment: Moshman adjourned the meeting at 12:25 p.m.
